I had an interesting conversation on Saturday while I was shopping for baby clothes! As I walked to the counter to pay for Emma's fashion week, the woman at the counter began an interesting conversation with me. First she graciously commented that I looked very well put together and that she had a dress kind of like what I was wearing. She said that it was a great idea that I had a cami under my dress since it was low cut. She said that she had never thought of doing that. I thanked her for the compliment!
She was about 5'4, about 130lbs and probably in her late 50's. She was an attractive and slim woman.
I commented that women in their 40's and up... should always wear cami's with their clothes because it looks better and it smooths out your clothes....(if you know what I mean?)
She then asked me a question "Do you wear denim mini skirts?" Well......(I'm glad you asked!)
"I do not wear them anymore, I believe that Women when they've reached their 40's have no business wearing them even if they are thin. (by the way, she was not wearing a mini skirt at the time...) Most women at this age need to cover their knees."
Now I know that sometimes there is an exception to the rule, like in this picture of Dara Torres who is 42 yrs old, but hardly ever! Something happens to our knees after 40. Believe me I've researched this very thoroughly. It does not matter if you are thin or not. You can tell a woman's age by her hands, neck and KNEES! Go ahead, stand in front of the mirror and put your legs together and take a good look at them....go on lift up that skirt...pull down your pants...take a look! See I told you! there is a little puffiness right under the knee cap....
well back to my story...I told her that Women after 40 need to dress their age....by the time you've reached that age you should know who you are and feel comfortable in your own style of fashion. With each decade you have to make some adjustments to your wardrobe. Otherwise you look ridiculous.
She looked at me and said "so...you really think I should get rid of all my denim mini-skirts? I asked her "are you thirty something"? She smiled and said "no"....
"Well then get rid of them once and for all, please" I said.
I finished paying and she said "I'm glad I asked you, no one has ever told me this before".
I grabbed my bag of goodies and said, "I'm glad you asked, You're welcome!" and off I went out with my linen white dress, a cami under, a smidge over my knees......
"A woman is only as young as her knees," the designer Mary Quant once said..
If you look like Dara....go ahead and wear a mini, I would too!
